Introduction

Captain Belinda Bennett made history as the first Black woman to command a commercial cruise ship, shattering long-standing barriers in the maritime industry. Born on the remote island of St Helena, her journey from deck cadet to captain of a Windstar Cruises vessel is a testament to resilience, ambition, and trailblazing leadership. This exhibition, part of the Rewriting Women Into Maritime History initiative, celebrates her remarkable career and the broader significance of representation at sea.
